16 декабря 2025 г. SUAI scientists have developed a method for quality control of sheet materials

St. Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation has developed a method that allows for fast and accurate inspection to detect defects in the production of sheet materials, in particular glass, metal and composite materials.

An important part of any automated production is the quality control of finished products. For this purpose, machine vision systems are widely used, which help to comprehensively check materials, blanks and finished products.

— The presented device is equipped with three modules for non-destructive testing of a material. The first and second modules are optical, they are equipped with two cameras for full—fledged surface inspection of the material on a roller conveyor with a diffused lighting system. The third module with an ultrasonic inspection system is designed to analyze internal defects in the material. Ultrasound monitoring allows detecting internal defects at different depths,» said Vitaly Bulatov, head of the study, Associate Professor of the Department of Electromechanics and Robotics at the Institute of Cyberphysical Systems at SUAI.

The research is conducted as part of the dissertation work of Maria Prokofieva, a PhD student at the Department of Electromechanics and Robotics at the Institute of Cyberphysical Systems.

According to the authors of the patent, the combination of optical and ultrasonic inspection method increases the probability of detecting defects
